## Homegrown Talent

Marcus Johnson is a Huntsville native — born at Huntsville Hospital, raised in Madison, graduated from UAH with a degree in Systems Engineering. After a brief stint in Northern Virginia, he came home to join Torch Technologies and hasn't looked back.

"I tried the DC thing for two years. Great experience, terrible commute, insane cost of living. When Torch offered me a position back home, it took me about 30 seconds to say yes."

The Employee Ownership Difference

Torch Technologies is 100% employee-owned through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan), which Marcus says fundamentally changes the culture.

"When every engineer is an owner, the dynamic shifts. There's no 'that's not my problem' attitude. If a project succeeds, we all benefit directly. If something needs fixing, people step up because it's literally their company."

"My ESOP account has grown significantly over the years. It's like having a second retirement account that grows based on the company's success. That kind of wealth-building opportunity is rare, especially for engineers early in their careers."

The Huntsville Engineering Ecosystem

Marcus has watched Huntsville transform over his career.

"When I started, Huntsville was defense and NASA, period. Now you've got Blue Origin building their BE-4 engine factory here, Mazda-Toyota bringing automotive engineering, biotech startups in HudsonAlpha, and a growing commercial tech scene. The diversification has been incredible."

"But defense is still the backbone, and that's not a bad thing. DoD budgets are more stable than people think, and the Huntsville corridor gets a disproportionate share because of Redstone Arsenal, MDA, and Space Command. Job security here is real."

Advice for Engineers Considering the Rocket City

"Look beyond the big names. Companies like Torch, Intuitive Research, CFD Research — these mid-size, often employee-owned firms offer engineers more responsibility, faster career growth, and ownership stakes that you'll never get at a Lockheed or Boeing. Huntsville is full of hidden gems."

"And join the community. Come to the engineering meetups, get on the UAH alumni network, show up to SmartHSV events. This city rewards people who get involved."
